Service Design

Service Design is a relatively infrequent term used in the US. But service design touches almost every industry we encounter. Service design is the way a customer experiences touchpoints of a brand. From the way the staff speaks to them in person, to how the printed materials look to the way they queue up on the plane or retail outlet, to the mobile application they use to checkout. Service design includes all of those touch points of online and offline interaction. Industries service designers work with include retail, finance, healthcare and food service. Applying Cybertechniques to Urban Problems - NYTimes.com

“All people need dignity, right? And the base of dignity is being able to recognize and feel like you’re part of humanity,” said Aynne Valencia, a San Francisco designer who has worked for some of the biggest technology companies.

Over a weekend, Ms. Valencia and a team of 19 others designed a mobile washing station that people could use to take showers and launder their clothes. The project, RefreshSF, would be funded through small donations made via text message to pay not just for the washing stations themselves but to employ attendants

RefreshSF is getting some press on New York Times, Huffington post and other news outlets.

India Rising

A spectacular talk by Hans Rosling.  This talk was given in 2009 but I think it's more relavant than ever.  Rosling predicts that Asia will be will have the highest income per person by 2048

And I will say, as an avid India-watcher, that the rise of India is happening.  I think the problems of India are the infrastructure which can and will be addressed.  And I think the strength of India is the culture, which is something I hope doesn't change.

As we see the world power shifting we have two ways Asia can go:

1). Sacrifice culture and natural resources for relentless growth

2). Slow, steady, sustainable prosperit, keeping their culture and leading with state of the art climate protecting technology.
